Booze for Prepping? Hell Yeah!

Booze has two characteristics that make it a great prep item … (1) it is consumable and (2) it is very barterable (is that a word?)

Stocking up on booze can prove to be a great move on your part for a SHTF scenario.  Certain spirits lend themselves to prepping.  The two big ones are vodka and wine.  Both can have almost an indefinite shelf life.  Both are commonly drank and appeal to a wide consumer base.

If things get bad enough you can even tie one on and try to forget that the world has ended.  There are always people that are going to want to trade for booze (and cigarettes too, but I don’t think the shelf life on a Marlboro is very long).  At the supermarket you can pick up a bottle every once in a while and you shouldn’t feel the pinch too bad.  My Safeway even has Popov in plastic bottles to prevent breakage during an earthquake or siege!

Oh, AND … vodka can be used as an antiseptic and to make Molotov cocktails… BOOYA!

Anyone else know of spirits with long shelf lives?

  1. barterable - bar-ter-a-ble, adj., something that is capable of being bartered

Ex. - The man tried to trade his wife, but she was fugly and unbarterable.

    It’s a word now.

  2. For practical purposes hard alcohol does not go bad. First and foremost I suggest getting some other more essential stuff before booze. Second of all mid shelf (price) booze in plastic bottles are good to have around for barter or personal use. Booze in moderate doses is awesome for morale. A stiff drink or two on card/ game night will do wonders for morale. I keep a few spare bottles just for that purpose.

  3. Vodka doesn’t make great fuel for molotovs.

Vodka with a bit of corn syrop … now there’s an idea.
Higher energy content, lower vapour pressure, stickier and still food safe.

  4. Why store it when you can make it? Running a still ain’t that hard; folks from where I come from been doing it for going on 400 years now.

Stocking up inventory invites looters, revenuers, etc. But just to have the still parts, etc. Nothing to steal

  5. Booze doesn’t stick around long enough for me to stockpile, on the other hand, I went and bought a full pound of tobacco and rolling papers to stash.
    One follows the other.
