I just wanted to mention a few items that should be on hand.
Ipecac, just in case someone eats or drinks something potentially harmful.
Hydrogen Peroxide, even small cuts can get infected & cause illness, loss of limbs or death.
A good pump water filter, you can never have too much water.
Lifecaps, you can get a lifecaps.net use coupon code "healthcap" to get 33% off. You can live on lifecaps & water alone, they make sure you have all the vitamins, minerals, sugars & even iodine.
You can never carry enough water & your body will go through more water & vitamins during stressful times. You need to keep your immune system working strong.

One bit of warning...

.....in addition to the previous info on scanners, digital trunking also has, generally, a digital scrambler attached to the radio in use. This unit is far more sophisticated than a simple, analog frequency invertor in the voice preamp of the radio. A scanner is useless to decode this (for the type of Uniden, cheepo stuff the average person has access to). If you can get the scanning codes, a Watkins-Johnson, with some addons, can decode the scrambling. Are you willing to spend 2-3K on a scanner???

Come on here....SP, I love your site as a new prepper, but really, if everything goes down like we think (all know) it will, lighting???? The suedo government or gangs will already have sweeped our towns. For once, I'd like to have a post about what to do when the cops/army/national guard comes to your door and says there is a manditory evacuation or to turn over all your guns, etc. Please let me know, because honestly, I think that will happen (just like Katrina) long before the gangs get to your house.

Make sure you've got plenty of durable clothing, especially if you're in an area subject to weather extremes...i.e., really cold or really hot.

EMP can't hurt flashlights.

EMP can't do a lot of the things people worry about.

Generally, if something is generally able to withstand static electricity, it's not likely to be harmed by EMP. The exceptions to this rule come from things that are designed to couple external RF energy into them, like radios; you do need to keep those in a metal box, or at least leave the antennas disconnected.

SP,
The scanners are great idea, but unless you buy a high dollar one now days you won't get anything but the weather. The fire and police around my way use high freq. and trunk their signal. Just keep that in mind.

Working on the moat...
