You might want to consider indoor air quality,if you are going to using several candles at once. Most candles use a petroleum based wax, giving off all kinds of bad stuff as they burn. One alternative is to use a 100% soy candle with a botanical oil formula. The wax itself is not toxic and is edible, but I hear it taste really bad. Also use candles that utilize a coreless all cotton wick .For a long term lighting solution these candles are best. http://tinyurl.com/yd9guon

I would take gold over the glock, i dont think you would ever have much of a problem getting anyone to accept gold as a form of payment, the glock may be a different story.

I highly recommend http://zennioptical.com/ for inexpensive eyeglasses. My family (5 out of 6 wear glasses!) has used them for a few years, gotten 8 or 9 pairs from them and always impressed with their quality & customer service. I have severe astigmatism and they actually emailed me to make sure the prescription I ordered was correct because they thought it might be a typo -- but they didn't charge any extra! Shipping takes 2 weeks but they charge the same whether you order 1 pair or a dozen.

I love this post - I'll be repacking the emergency kits in my pickup & my roommate's car as soon as I get home from work. Since neither of us is in great physical shape (she's a disabled vet) for really long walks, I'm thinking an extra pair of socks & cushioned band-aids for blisters are the most important "extra" items.

I loved the show early on - but about mid-way thru it started loosing me. The main reason was the emotional status of the people.
Overand over again people are acting like this is real emergency. People in the colony are acting like they actually fear for their lives when intruders come around. Come on - when strangers come around asking for food - say - "Listen, when you get off the set - go stop by McDonalds." For this reason I really began thinking the whole thing was staged. At the very end - it was confirmed. When the guy said he was going back to LA to help rebuild - come on man!!!!! It's a TV show!!!!! You know that!!!

Good premise but just flat out staged.

Comment on CALIFORNIA QUAKE IMMINENT!! by Taylor

Preparedness is key. Each person should immedietly create two Bug Out Bags (BOB) and one Never Going Home Bag (NGHB). One bug out bag should be stored in your home, and the other should be stored in your car. The NGH Bag should be stored in your home.

Bug Out Bags should have everything you need to survive at leas 72 hours. Food such as MREs, clothing, hygienic products, WATER, blankets, Firearms and ammunition, emergency whistle, knife, entrenching tool, crowbar, maps of the area and possible bug out routes, sunglasses, lighters, medical kit, etc, etc.

The Never Going Home Bag should contain the possessions you own that are irreplaceable - Family pictures, and anything else that is very important to you. This way, if your building becomes unstable, or partially collapses you can Get Out Of Dodge (GOOD) quickly with the items you cannot leave behind.

You should have evacuations plans premade for your family. They should all know these plans, and the role they will play in case of an emergency. If a huge earthquake hits, conditions will deteriorate very quickly. Remember what happened with Hurricane Katrina. You cannot depend on the Federal Government to save you in a disaster scenario. You cannot depend on the Feds to protect you either. In a sense, it becomes and every man for himself situation. If people know you have vital supplies they might do anything to take them. For this reason you should make sure to have multiple firearms and a good amount of ammunition. I recommend 3 guns: A pistol, a rifle, and a "riot" shotgun. For a pistol I recommend a 1911 in .45ACP, for a Shotgun, i recommend pump action - Remington 870 in 12 gauge, and for a rifle i recommend an AR-15 variant in .223 Remington. I would say the proper amount of ammunition you should have is about 60 rounds of .45, 100 12 Gauge Shells in 00 Buck, and about 200 rounds of .223 for your AR variant. Yes, AR-15 variants are legal in California, ask your local gun shop how to stay CA DOJ compliant with these rifles.

Best of luck to you, and remember being prepared will make the difference in your survival. This is no Joke, and is part of the risk of living in California.

Welcome back, and I would say that a corollary to putting a GHB together is to take it out with you and try hiking a few miles with it.

Also, since one mostly drives to/from work, studying the map and satellite view of the route in Google or Mapquest might be helpful in pointing out alternate routes (this is in addition to having a paper map on hand). In many cities, I don't think walking down the freeway would necessarily be likely to lead to success if things were seriously awry.

First time on your site..excellent info..We are in the process of stocking up on everything that will be needed when TSHTF. One observation from a newbie, print copies of all the good info, the internet will not help you when you need it most

Our family watched every episode. It was ok, some of it was pretty unrealistic (like landing in a building with an entire Lowes inventory on hand!), but it did raise awareness and present interesting scenarios. Surviving without firearms was pretty unrealistic too, but I guess the producers didn't know how to deal with that safely. Notice how the colonists were completely at the mercy of the 3 armed traders once they let them into their compound.
